India's Airtel to increase service prices in December

Indian operator Bharti Airtel has announced it will increase its service prices starting December. Via this measure, Airtel said it seeks to “remain viable and thereby continue to invest in [its] digital infrastructure”. 

India's telecoms regulator plans to soon launch consultations related to pricing in the domestic mobile sector. According to Airtel, the local telecom sector “is highly capital intensive with fast changing technology cycles that require continuing investments”. “It is, therefore, extremely important that the industry remains viable to support the vision of Digital India”, the operator added.

Market competitor Vodafone Idea also announced plans to increase its service tariffs effective 1 December this year. According to Vodafone Idea, mobile data charges in India “are by far the cheapest in the world even as the demand for mobile data services continue to grow rapidly”.

Jio launches 'New All-in-One Plans' in India

Indian mobile operator Reliance Jio has introduced its 'New All-in-One Plans'. Jio claims its new tariff plans will provide up to 300 percent more benefits to the Jio consumers. Customers can now subscribe to the INR 199 tariff plan which includes unlimited on-net calls and 1,000 minutes for calls to non-Jio mobile numbers. This pack is valid for one month.

Vodafone Idea introduces prepay tariff plan offering

Indian mobile operator Vodafone Idea has introduced a new tariff plan offering for its prepay customers. The new plans will be available across India starting with 3 December. Vodafone Idea plans to expand its 4G services coverage to 1 billion Indian citizens by March 2020. The operator currently serves 300 million customers across India.

Vodafone Idea's quarterly revenue drops nearly 4% on seasonality, severe floods

Indian operator Vodafone Idea posted revenue of INR 108.4 billion for the quarter ended 31 September 2019, which represents a decline of 3.8 percent quarter-on-quarter. Revenue was negatively impacted by seasonality and by severe floods in many of the operator's major markets, the company said. India's smartphone market ships record 46.6 mln units in Q3

India's smartphone market shipped a record 46.6 million units in the third quarter of 2019, with 26.5 percent quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) and 9.3 percent year-over-year (year-on-year) growth, according to data from the International Data Corporation's (IDC). Vodafone Group reported a small rise of 0.4 percent in revenues for its fiscal first half to September to EUR 21.94 billion, helped by its takeover of activities from Liberty Global from August. Indian government announces BSNL-MTNL merger plan

The Indian government has decided to merge state-owned operators BSNL and MTNL in an attempt to revive the two loss-making companies. The recently approved "revival package" includes raising sovereign bonds, monetising assets and voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) for employees, local newspaper The Economic Times reports. The government plans to merge MTNL with BSNL, after which MTNL will become a BSNL subsidiary.
