Jolla creates Sailfish China consortium, to develop local OS

Finnish mobile company Jolla, developer of the ‘Sailfish’ open mobile operating system, has established the Sailfish China consortium. Jolla has signed an exclusive license agreement with the consortium, which aims to build a Sailfish OS-based independent mobile operating system for China. The Sailfish consortium plans to invest USD 250 million in the Sailfish ecosystem development in China.

The Sailfish OS license granted to the consortium gives an exclusive license and rights to further develop a Chinese operating system based on Sailfish OS. The Sailfish China consortium aims to develop Sailfish OS-based services for secure smartphones, the automotive industry, TV, IoT and smartwatches.

Shan Li, a Chinese private equity investor and an early Jolla investor, will take a leading role in building up the consortium.

Jala said it decided to use Jolla's Sailfish OS because of its openness and the fact that it allows full control over security features. The company added that its goal was to build an independent mobile ecosystem for Latin America. It also announced that the Accione phone will use chipset technology provided by Qualcomm.

Jolla to launch Sailfish OS for Sony Xperia phones

Jolla announced plans to launch a version of its Sailfish operating system for Sony Xperia smartphones. The first project is a Sailfish OS-powered Xperia X, which is on show at Jolla's stand at Mobile World Congress. Jolla says Sailfish gets Russian government approval

Finnish mobile company Jolla said that its Sailfish OS has been officially accepted as the only mobile operating system in Russia to be used in governmental and government-controlled corporations' forthcoming mobile device projects. Jolla has also started discussions in China and South Africa about building local mobile OS ecosystems for the countries.

Jolla C smartphone starts pre-sales in Russia

Finnish company Jolla has started pre-sales of its Jolla C Sailfish-OS powered smartphone in Russia. The dual-Sim device, including a 5-inch screen, 8 megapixel camera and 16 GB internal memory, can be ordered on the Buyon.ru online shop. A limited batch of the devices will be available for sale in Russia at this stage, and the price will total RUB 14,990.

Intex launches Sailfish smartphone in India

Jolla, the Finnish developer of open mobile operating system Sailfish, has announced that its licensing partner Intex Technologies has started sales of its first licensed Sailfish OS device, the Intex Aqua Fish. The licensed Sailfish OS product is available in online channels in India. The Aqua Fish smartphone, developed in partnership with Jolla, is now available in India for INR 5,499.

Jolla raises USD 12 mln
