South Korea's ICT ministry has announced plans to boost competition on the local 5G market through the release of affordable mobile data plans from mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), Yonhap news agency reports. The ICT ministry said 10 MVNOs in the country, including Sejong Telecom, will release new data plans starting this month that provide up to 30 GB of data for KRW 40,000 (approximately USD 35).
The country's major operators SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus do not currently offer plans at a similar price point for the same amount of data.
South Korea’s ICT ministry recently changed administrative rules so that MVNOs can independently design 5G data plans. MVNOs previously had to work with larger operators to develop mobile data plans.
South Korean ended February with 13.66 million5G subscribers, of which 7,000 were using services provided by MVNOs. The total number of MVNO users reached 9.27 million in February this year, of which 6.6 million were subscribed to 4G services.
