KPN activates 1,000th base station with LTE-Advanced

KPN announced the milestone of its 1,000th 4G+ antenna activated, in The Hague. The company said this puts it on track to meet its targets for the roll-out of LTE-Advanced. The Dutch operator is using 800-1800 carrier aggregation to deliver speeds up to 225 Mbps download and 35Mbps upload. KPN said it expects the number of customers with 4G+ compatible handsets to grow quickly, thanks to recent launches like the Samsung S6 and Edge and the latest iPhones. 

Both KPN and Vodafone started the roll-out of 4G+ late last year, and Vodafone recently announced the faster service is available in 130 municipalities. KPN said it covers all the major cities and some outlying areas like the Wadden islands in the north of the country. T-Mobile is expected to start testing LTE-Advanced in November.

KPN Q3 revenues fall 2.6%, profits still higher

KPN announced customer gains in the consumer market in the third quarter, but weakness in the business market pushed group revenues 2.6 percent lower to EUR 1.76 billion. The ongoing cost reductions at the Dutch operator led to a 4.6 percent rise in adjusted EBITDA to EUR 640 million. Over half Dutch consumers have 4G smartphones

The share of Dutch consumers with 4G devices has nearly doubled in the past year, from 27 percent in August 2014 to 51 percent in September this year. Over the same period, the use of 4G networks nearly tripled, from 12 percent to 33 percent. Among those not yet using 4G, 8 percent expect to switch to LTE in the next six months, according to the latest results from the Telecompaper Consumer Panel.

T-Mobile Netherlands reaches over 1.2 mln 4G customers

T-Mobile Netherlands had 1.21 million customers with 4G devices as of mid-August, a spokeswoman told Telecompaper. That's up from around 1 million at the end of March. The mobile operator said it was on track to complete the roll-out of its 4G network this year, with expected 95 percent population coverage by the end of October. KPN rolls out LTE-A to quarter of sites

KPN has expanded LTE-Advanced to around a quarter of its 4G antenna sites. Dutch business operator VoiceWorks is planning to start providing MVNE-based LTE Advanced/4G+ services where available. Voiceworks operates on the network of KPN, which started rolling out 4G+ in September 2014.
