KPN launches voice over LTE
Dutch operator KPN announced the launch of voice over LTE services, after several successful tests conducted in partnership with Samsung. In the coming months customers with supporting handsets will be gradually migrated to the service. The first supporting phones are the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, and the list will be expanded to other models and manufacturers in the coming months.

In addition to VoLTE, KPN plans to launch voice over Wi-Fi in 2017. The latter is expected to be helpful especially for indoor calls, where the mobile networks signal may be weaker.

Dutch operators swap rankings in P3 network test

T-Mobile has again emerged as the best mobile network in the Netherlands in the annual P3 Connect Mobile Benchmark test, by P3 Communications. Vodafone NL, Tele2 NL record 430,000 active VoLTE users

Around 430,000 Vodafone and Tele2 subscribers in the Netherlands use VoLTE, or the ability to make calls over 4G, the latest Telecompaper study showed, looking at the country's four operators with their own 4G network. No exact figures are known for KPN and T-Mobile Netherlands; it is estimated that KPN has several hundred thousand users. All four operators have activated VoLTE on their 4G network. T-Mobile Netherlands spokeswoman Kathleen Loods noted however that VoLTE is only yet available for some users.

KPN tests 3G spectrum on LTE network

KPN is testing the use of 3G spectrum for its 4G network, according to the site 4Gmasten.nl. The spectrum swap is active at a site in Vlaardingen. KPN confirmed that it plans to use part of the 3G spectrum to boost LTE capacity and speed in congested areas. It's also tested the refarming around its head office in The Hague. The operator already uses the 800, 1,800 and 2,600 MHz bands for LTE.

Vodafone Netherlands announced the launch of VoLTE and VoWiFi services to customers. Vodafone started beta testing the services in August, and customers with compatible devices will now be informed that they can start using the services. Vodafone Netherlands starts testing VoLTE with customers

Vodafone Netherlands said it's starting a beta test of VoLTE services with around 300 customers. The customers already have access to 4G and a Samsung Galaxy A5, S6 or S7, which is updated with the required firmware from Vodafone. During the test, their calls will go automatically over 4G or Wi-Fi. Vodafone said on its customer forum that it is testing the voice service in preparation for a launch towards the end of this year.

Tele2 Netherlands launches VoLTE services

Tele2 Netherlands has activated VoLTE services on its 4G network. The operator said it will gradually roll out VoLTE and aims to have all its customers with compatible handsets using the voice services on the 4G network by the end of this summer. The company's LTE network already has 96 percent outdoor coverage, while a fallback to the T-Mobile 2G/3G network will still be available for voice services.
