KPN starts VoLTE pilot
KPN is starting a pilot of voice over LTE on its 4G network. The test will determine whether the current technology is stable enough to handle voice traffic over the LTE network. To date, the 4G network only handles data services. Vodafone Netherlands announced last month that it was also testing VoLTE and expected to introduce the technique by mid-2015.

According to research by Telecompaper using equipment provided by KPN, the operator still has a number of obstacles to overcome befor it can launch VoLTE commercially. At the moment it does not yet meet the stability and reliability standards of the operator. The tests by Telecompaper show that a voice call on the 4G network is only possible if the two phones are using the same antenna. The automatic fallback to the 2G or 3G network when 4G is not available is also not working, leading to dropped calls when the network switches from 4G to 3G.

Once the VoLTE service is working, KPN will offer automatically HD Voice quality. While HD Voice is already implemented on the 4G and 3G networks, tests by Telecompaper show that HD Voice only works when the participants in the call use the same type of network. A call between a phone on the 3G network and a phone on the 4G network does not support HD Voice.
