Lenovo developing first Google Project Tango smartphone

Lenovo has announced at CES that it’s working with Google to develop the first Project Tango smartphone. In a brief statement, the company said the device will be available in the summer and will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Google’s Project Tango is a technology platform that uses advanced computer vision, depth sensing and motion tracking to create on-screen 3D experiences, allowing users to explore their physical environments via their device. Lenovo said it’s collaborating closely with Google and Qualcomm to optimise the software and hardware to ensure consumers get the most out of the platform.

Lenovo added that, as part of the partnership, the companies will be inviting developers to help grow the Project Tango app ecosystem. The app incubator programme is open to all developers, who can submit their proposals for a chance to win funding and have their app preloaded on Lenovo’s upcoming smartphone. The submission period closes on 15 February 2016.

Project Tango was first announced by Google back in 2014 and the company last year launched a development kit for the 3D-mapping platform.
