Chinese electronics maker Lenovo is studying the launch of a manufacturing plant for smartphones and tablets in India, The Economic Times reports, citing Lenovo India marketing director Bhaskar Choudhuri. "We are exploring the opportunity of setting up a manufacturing unit in the country", said Choudhuri. Lenovo already operates a computer manufacturing plant in Puducherry.
Lenovo’s plans to open a smartphone and tablet manufacturing plant in India are mainly due to the government's 'Make in India' programme, as well as the huge opportunity which country presents, the Lenovo executive added.
According to Choudhuri, smartphone penetration in India currently stands at only 30 percent. "This shows that there is enough headroom for growth", he added. "We believe that 4G/LTE will be the dominant technology in the years to come," Choudhuri added.
According to the company executive, Lenovo also plans to expand retail presence with the opening of more exclusive Lenovo stores.
