LG unveils flagship V30 smartphone at IFA

LG has unveiled at the IFA show in Berlin its new flagship smartphone for the year-end shopping season, the V30. Building on a number of the premium features in the G6 released earlier this year, LG already disclosed a number of the main features of the V30 prior to the unveiling. These include a 6-inch OLED FullVision display covering nearly the entire front of the device, the first f/1.6 aperture camera with a Crystal Clear lens and premium audio with a Quad DAC.

The V30 also comes with wireless charging and Quick Charge 3.0, promising a 50 percent charge in 30 minutes. In addition to a fingerprint scanner, it comes with facial and voice recognition to unlock the device and key functions. LG also promises durability, with an H-beam design, IP68 water and dust resistance and certification under US military durability tests.

Other features include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, Android 7.1.2 plus Google Assistant and Google Daydream for VR, and an always-on display with 'floating bar' for quick access to up to five apps without turning on the screen. The phone also comes with audio tuning and a pair of headphones from B&O.

The back camera features a 16MP standard angle lens and a 13MP wide angle lens with OIS, EIS and Hybrid Auto Focus that combines both Laser Detection Auto Focus and Phase Detection Auto Focus. In addition to manual mode, the camera offers the new Cine Mode, with a range of features for taking and editing videos.

The phone will also come with USD 100 in credits for the Beat Fever game by WRKSHP in order to highlight the display and audio features for gaming.

The V30 will launch first in LG's home market South Korea on 21 September and will be followed by key markets in North America, Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The V30 with 64GB ROM will come in four colours (Aurora Black, Cloud Silver, Moroccan Blue and Lavender Violet), while the LG V30+ with 128GB of storage will be available in limited markets.

The V30 will notably be one of the first on the market to support LTE in the 600 MHz band. US carrier T-Mobile, which just launched in the band, said it will carry the device. AT&T said it will also use the LG phone in areas where it's testing new network technologies, under its '5G Evolution' programme.
