Liberty LatAm picks Ericsson as sole mobile core network vendor
Ericsson announced a contract to carry out a major upgrade of Liberty Latin America’s mobile core network in the Caribbean and Latin America. The regional communications services giant has chosen Ericsson as its sole mobile core network vendor in what is described as a major network modernisation drive. Under the terms of the three-year deal, Ericsson will deploy a virtualised and cloud-based mobile core network system to serve the regional Liberty Latin America market in a project that’s expected to get underway in the second half of 2020.

By the end of this three-year project, Liberty Latin America’s mobile core networks will be fully virtualised, more resilient and prepared for future mobile technologies, said the partners. “We continue to invest and modernise our network across the region to ensure better voice quality, higher data speeds, lower latency, data security and increased network resiliency, improving our customer experiences,” said Liberty Latin America’s Chief Technology and Product Officer Vivek Khemka, adding that “current circumstances have shown the importance of resilient, high-speed networks.”

Liberty Latin America last month reported revenues of USD 931 million in the first quarter of 2020, up 1.6 percent year on year, but announced that it was withdrawing previously provided financial guidance due to the lack of visibility on the duration and extent of impacts related to the Covid-19 pandemic throughout the region.
