Civil rights group Liberty has expressed disappointment after the High Court dismissed its challenge against parts of the UK government's Investigatory Powers Act (IPA) 2016.
In a statement, Liberty said that the ruling allowed the government to continue spying on citizens, violating their rights to free expression and privacy. The High Court judges rejected Liberty's argument that there were no safeguards in the IPA to prevent abuse of power.
Liberty insisted that the security services cannot be trusted to respect citizens' rights and protect their personal data, and said that the bulk surveillance powers allowed the state to collect the web history, calls and messages of 'ordinary people not suspected of any wrong-doing'.
