Magic Leap starts sales of first mixed reality set

The mixed reality start-up Magic Leap has started shipping its first product. The Magic Leap One Creators Edition is available in selected parts of the US starting at USD 2,295 and includes the Lightwear headset, Lightpack computing pack and Control handheld input device.

Magic Leap announced several early experiences for the new device. These include Tonandi, developed with the band Sigur Ros to experience their music in a new interactive, audio-visual experience, and Create, a mixed reality experience for users to develop their own adventures at home, developed by Magic Leap Studios. The upcoming Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders is an action game involving invading evil robots, developed with Weta Workshop.

The device also runs a number of core applications with the Magic Leap system, such as the Helio web browser which supports 3D and spatial web experiences, the Screens video player for multiple displays in the user's physical space, and Magic Leap’s Social application to connect and collaborate with others. Twilio provides the connection services for the Social app.

The Creators Edition also comes with Magic Kit, with code samples and and design tips to help users develop their own experiences with the system. Magic Leap is limiting the release to selected cities in the US to start, as each purchase comes with a free technician visit to help users fit and set up the device.
