MediaTek announces IoT developer platform, MediaTek Labs

Taiwan-based fabless semiconductor company MediaTek has announced the LinkIt developer platform, which integrates the company’s Aster SoC. The MediaTek Aster SoC is designed to enable the developer community to create a broad range of affordable wearable and IoT products.  LinkIt is supported by reference designs enabling the creation of various form factors, functionalities and internet connected devices. Synergies between the microprocessor unit and communication modules facilitate development and save time in new device creation.

LinkIt supports OTA updates to enable push and install software stack from phones or computers to devices built with MediaTek Aster. It also includes a plug-in SDK for Arduino and VisualStudio, with support for Eclipse planned in the fourth quarter. Finally, LinkIt features a hardware development kit (HDK) based on the LinkIt board.

The launch of LinkIt is a part of MediaTek's wider initiative for the developer community called MediaTek Labs which will officially launch in the third quarter. MediaTek Labs will stimulate and support the creation of wearable devices and IoT applications based on the LinkIt platform.

MediaTek's 4G, tablet solution shipments to exceed goals

Taiwan-based fabless semiconductor company MediaTek's shipments of 4G smartphone solutions and tablet solutions this year are expected to surpass its targets of 40 million and 15 million units, respectively, due to improved order visibility, Digitimes reports citing industry sources. Having already rolled out quad and 8-core 4G chips, MediaTek's 4G solution shipments will see a boost in the second half of this year when it expects to release 64-bit 4G chips, according to the sources.

MediaTek to see lower revenues in May due to falling orders

Taiwanese fabless semiconductor firm MediaTek expects revenues in May to reach TWD 15-16 billion, a decline of 15 percent compared with the previous month due to lower orders from China, Digitimes reports, citing industry sources. Last month, MediaTek's revenues reached TWD 19.1 billion due to strong orders from the supply chain in China as vendors there rushed to build up inventories for the 01 May holidays.

MediaTek zal in het derde kwartaal van dit jaar beginnen met de grootschalige productie van chips voor wearables en Internet of Things-toepassingen, schrijft Digitmes op basis van bronnen binnen de supply chain.
