MetroPCS deploys RCS on LTE network
MetroPCS Communications has announced the commercial launch of Rich Communication Service (RCS) on its LTE network. MetroPCS will offer its RCS services under the GSMA-licensed joyn brand, Based on the GSMA RCS 5.0 standard, joyn by MetroPCS will deliver a unified and intuitive way to use services like integrated instant messaging or chat, Wi-Fi and video calling and simplified content sharing. MetroPCS will support the following RCS services at launch for customers with LTE joyn-enabled smartphones: contacts presence which features contact availability/status sync; calendar sync and social network interaction; Enriched Chat which features threaded conversations; instant messaging and group chat; conversational view and delivery of read notifications and composing indications; content sharing; and Wi-Fi and video calling. Joyn by MetroPCS is currently available on the Samsung Galaxy Attain and can be downloaded from the @metro App Store and Google Play. MetroPCS plans to roll out additional RCS-enabled 4G smartphones and services later this year and throughout 2013 with native support for joyn services coming at a later date.
