Microsoft announces new Surface tablet models

Microsoft has announced two new Surface tablet models - the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 - along with an extended range of Surface accessories. The tablets will be available from Microsoft retail stores and select third-party retailers in 22 initial markets, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and US from 22 October, and China in early-November. Additional markets will be announced in the coming months.

Both models have significant upgrades, including improvements to processing power and battery life, to display and camera resolution, and to the Kickstand, which now offers dual angles. Customers can pre-order Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 from 08.00 hours EDT on 24 September from Microsoft's website, Microsoft Stores and Best Buy in the US and Canada, as well as from select retailers in most Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 launch markets. Customers buying either model will get free Skype calling to landlines in more than 60 countries for 12 months, unlimited Skype WiFi on their device for 12 months, and 200 GB of free SkyDrive storage for two years.

The Surface 2 is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 4 processor and offers a 10.6-in ClearType Full HD display and USB 3.0 port. It has a 3.5-megapixel front camera and 5-megapixel rear camera, and will ship with Windows RT 8.1. Surface 2 is pre-loaded with Office Home & Student 2013 RT and Outlook RT, and will be offered in 32GB and 64 B versions from USD 449. The Surface Pro 2 is powered by a 4th generation Intel Core i5 processor. It will be offered in 64 GB and 128GB configurations with 4 GB of RAM and 256GB and 512GB configurations with 8 GB of RAM, costing from USD 899.
