Microsoft calls for govt regulation of facial recognition technology
Brad Smith, the chief legal officer at Microsoft, is calling on the US government to regulate face recognition technology, noting the dangers it could represent for the freedom of citizens. In a blog post, Smith cited a number of examples, such as the possible creation of a database of anyone who has ever attended a political rally or governmental tracking of residents as they move about without their permission or knowledge.

Smith said that the only way to manage use of the technology, is for government to do it, “informed by a bipartisan and expert commission.” He added that letting companies regulate themselves will not work, as some companies adopt standards and others done.
