Microsoft Cortana alpha now in France, Italy, Germany, Spain
Microsoft has released an alpha version of its Cortana personal digital assistant to participants in the Windows Phone Developer Preview Programme in France, Italy, Germany and Spain. This follows beta launches in the US, China and the UK. Alpha means that Cortana is new to these new European countries, most of the features in the beta version are available but some are missing or coming soon. For example, flight tracking is not available at this time for alpha. Transit data is currently limited to larger cities and will expand as the company has more data. Use by the developer community will help improve the speech and language recognition models for the new languages, helping Cortana improve her conversational understanding. Over time, the company plans to make Cortana available as a beta in its four new European markets.

Microsoft has announced that the Lumia 435 smartphone will be launched on 13 February in Italy, which remains one of the world's biggest markets for Windows Phone-powered handsets. The handset runs on Windows Phone 8.1 and features a 4-inch display with 800 x 480 pixels in WVGA quality as well as a 2-megapixel main camera, 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor and 8GB of internal memory. It comes in green, orange, white and black, and will be available for EUR 89 unlocked.

Lopez to take over as Microsoft Iberica president in June

Pilar Lopez Alvarez will take over from Maria Garana as the new president of Microsoft Iberica from 30 June, reports Europa Press. Lopez is currently global simplification director at Telefonica and previously worked for JP Morgan in Madrid, London and New York. Garana, who has been Microsoft Iberica president since 2008, will take up a new post at Microsoft's corporate headquarters in Redmond.
