Microsoft unveils Surface desktop, Windows Creators update
Microsoft is expanding its Surface computer range with its first desktop model, the Surface Studio. Featuring a 28-inch PixelSense touch display that can tilt to resemble a drafting board, the Surfance Studio targets "creatives", a market traditionally dominated by Apple.

The computer runs the latest 6th Generation Intel Core processors with Nvidia GeForce graphics and comes with the Surface Pen for writing directly on the screen and the new Surface Dial peripheral for additional tools to sketch and draw on the screen of the computer. Surface Studio will start at USD 2,999 and is available for pre-order in the US through Microsoft stores and BestBuy.com. It will begin shipping in limited quantities this holiday with broader availability in early 2017.

Microsoft also updated the Surface Book laptop range with three new models. They also run 6th Generation Intel Core i7 processors and come with twice the graphics processing power of the original Surface series, Microsoft said. The Surface Book with Performance Base also offers longer batter life. Starting at USD 2,399, the new laptops will be available at Microsoft stores and select retailers in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand from 10 November.

As part of a wider effort to highlight the creative possibilities of its products, Microsoft unveiled a new update for Windows 10 called the Creators Update. Expected to roll out in early 2017, this is designed to enable new augemented and virtual reality experiences on Windows devices.

The Creators Update comes with an update of the Paint programme to enable 3D art, as well as the new online community Remix3D.com to connect creators and creations around the world. Remix 3D will target players of the Microsoft game Minecraft to share their 3-D creations, and Microsoft also is partnering with Trimble to bring the 3-D modeling program Sketchup to Remix3D.com. Microsoft said support for 3-D in Word, Excel and PowerPoint will follow over the next year.

OEMs such as Dell, Asus, Lenovo and HP are expected to develop VR headsets that take advantage of the new 3D options on Windows computers. Microsoft said these will be available in 2017 at prices starting as low as USD 299. The company is also developing its own HoloLens to take advantage of the new features and develop in-home applications, such as previewing products before purchase.
