Motorola unveils low-cost Moto E smartphone in India

Motorola Mobility has unveiled its latest smartphone, the Moto E, at an event in India. The device is even cheaper than its previous mobile, retailing at INR 6,999 (USD 117) in India without a service contract. The Android 4.4 smartphone comes with a 4.3-inch 540x960 qHD display, 1 GB RAM, 4GB storage, Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 5 megapixel rear camera, FM radio and support for two Sims.

Motorola highlighted the durability of the 3G device, with Corning Gorilla Glass and a water-resistant splash guard, as well as a long-lasting 1,980 mAh battery. The Moto E also offers a choice of interchangeable shells, available in over 20 colours. The Moto E goes on sale 13 May in India first, on the site Flipkart. The company will launch the phone in other markets later, with a marketing campaign under the tagline 'Made to last. Priced for all'.

Motorola said it aims to bring an affordable device to the 70 percent of the world's mobile users still using feature phones. In the US, where the company is pushing the hastag 'GoodbyeFlipPhone' on Twitter, the phone will sell on the Motorola website for USD 129. The company said it has agreements with more than 80 operators to launch the Moto E in over 40 countries in the coming weeks.

In addition, Motorola introduced a new version of the Moto G smartphone supporting LTE. It offers the same features plus 4G access, at a cost of USD 219. The 3G version remains on sale as well, at USD 179.
