Netflix discounts first month to as little as 5 cents in France

Netflix has started testing a discounted price the first month for new subscribers in France. While the free 30-day trial is no longer available, in France new customers can pay a reduced price of EUR 0.05 to EUR 3.99 per month, local site Numerama reports. The exact amount varies, but may be EUR 0.05, 0.99 or 3.99 for 30 days. 

Similar offers are available elsewhere in certain European countries, starting at EUR 0.05 for the first month in Belgium or EUR 0.99 in Spain. In other countries such as the UK, Romania or Netherlands, no discounts are available, while in Italy, Netflix is still offering a seven-day free trial. In Germany, the free trial is no longer available, but the company has passed on the reduction in VAT there to customers until the end of 2020. 

Netflix's normal subscriptions start at EUR 7.99 per month.

Netflix has launched two new subscription plans in South Africa that are aimed specifically at mobile devices, Mybroadband reported. The Mobile plan costs ZAR 39 per month and Mobile+ costs ZAR 59. Netflix seems to be rolling out these packages locally, and visitors to Netflix's sign-up page may be presented with either option.

Netflix has started offering free access to some of its popular programmes. Certain Netflix Original Movies and TV episodes are available online free, without the need to create a Netflix account. These can be accessed only over a computer or Android device; iOS browsers are not supported.

Netflix increases prices for all but basic service in Austria

Netflix is increasing the price for the streaming service in Austria, Der Standard reports. The price for the premium subscription, which includes videos in Ultra HD, HDR and playback on up to four devices at the same time, will increase by EUR 2.00 to EUR 17.99 per month. The price for subscriptions to watch content in HD increases by EUR 1.00 to EUR 11.99 per month. The basic tariff, which offers streaming for one device in standard definition, remains unchanged at EUR 7.99 per month.

Netflix signs deal with distributor MK2 to show classic movies in France

Netflix announced a partnership with French movie producer and distributor MK2 covering a catalogue of classics from film directors including Francois Truffaut, Charlie Chaplin and David Lynch. The deal will enable Netflix's subscribers in France to view 50 titles during the current year. According to Variety, the agreement is not exclusive and other streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video will also have access to MK2's catalogue.

Netflix donates EUR 1 mln to support French workers in TV-cinema industry

Netflix has announced that it will contribute EUR 1 million to a Covid-19 relief fund launched by French non-profit group Audiens, which provides social security cover for the media and cultural sectors. The creation of the fund, supported by national film centre CNC, aims to help financially the most vulnerable professions in the TV-cinema industry, impacted by the production shut down caused by the pandemic.

Netflix has announced the inauguration of its new office in France, located in the capital's ninth arrondissement. The company, which currently employs 40 people in the country, had previously opened a small office in Paris, but decided to close it in 2016. The new Paris office is its fourth in Europe.

Netflix keeps growth momentum in France with 6.7 million subscribers

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said in an interview with L'Express that the platform has 6.7 million French subscribers. In September 2019, he told Le Figaro that Netflix's customer base in France had reached just over 6 million and that the company was investing nearly EUR 100 million in local productions. These numbers point to sustained growth in France, where the company previously revealed that subscribers had increased from nearly 3.5 million in April 2018 to over 5 million in February 2019.

Amazon Prime Video, Canal+ Series join most popular SVoD services in France - study

Nearly 22 percent of the audience accessing SVoD platforms in France have used Amazon Prime Video in September, according to the most recent survey commissioned by national film centre CNC. The service has moved up into second place after its share increased by 6 percentage points over 12 months. In comparison, 56.6 percent of respondents accessed market leader Netflix (+2.4 points over the same period).
