Nokia expands Ovi services for Series 40 devices
Nokia has unveiled a new Touch and Type phone, the C3, as well as outlined plans to bring more of its Ovi series to its Series 40 feature phones. The C3 Touch and Type features a classic keypad as well as a touch screen. The phone comes with a stainless steel chassis, 3G, WLAN, a 5 megapixel camera with flash, a music player and FM radio and it supports up to a 32GB memory card. The phone offers quick access to messaging and e-mail plus applications and games from the Ovi Store. Priced at EUR 145, excluding taxes and subsidies, it is expected to be available in Q4. The company also outlined at its Nokia World event London how it plans to bring software and services typically offered on smartphones to its mid-tier devices. These include the Ovi browser, developed from its acquisition of Novarra, which is now in beta release for Series 40 phones, as well as expanded access to the Ovi Store on S40 phones. Nokia said its Ovi Mail service has reached more than 14 million activated accounts, the large majority of which are new users coming from emerging markets. In the last six months, 60 percent of new Ovi Mail accounts are from Southeast Asia Pacific and Africa. The company also cliams to be the largest source of digital music revenue in markets including Brazil, Mexico and India. Ovi music services are now live across 38 markets. In addition, Ovi Life Tools, available in India, Indonesia and China, now have more than 4.7 million users. The Nokia Money service has also moved to full commercial service after the pilot in Pune, India called Mobile Money Services by Yes Bank, and will start its countrywide roll-out in Chandigarh.
