Nokia has announced that it will build a new "Home of Radio" campus in the Finnish city of Oulu after agreeing finance. Talks are under way with developer candidates and completion is due in 2025. The site on the Linnanmaa-Ritaharju plot will cater to future ways of working, including purpose-driven and more collaborative office spaces.
The city of Oulu is preparing road relocation in the Linnanmaa-Ritaharju area, which is due for completion in summer 2022. After that, the campus construction will begin. Nokia said the new campus will enable its continuous innovation and development at the forefront of 5G technologies.
The vendor says it has reached an agreement with a financing partner and negotiations are continuing with the developer candidates who will be responsible for the turnkey delivery of the construction project. The design phase of the campus is proceeding rapidly with a dedicated project team that includes a project management specialist, business coordinators, campus team members, a "user experience" (UX) specialist, architects and design specialists in various fields of expertise.
Erja Sankari, head of the Nokia Oulu site and VP for the global supply chain, said the campus will be a new "Home of Radio". Sankari said the campus follows Nokia's vision of connecting people, technology and nature. It aims to build a functional, scalable and sustainable campus to create "the best possible workplace" that meets the needs for flexibility, productivity, collaboration and innovation.
Oulu is a key R&D site for Nokia, said the company, which continues to recruit new R&D staff there. From 2018-2020, Nokia hired around 1,200 permanent employees in Finland and in 2021, it has taken on 500 more. The majority of the new positions are in R&D and the workers will be located at Nokia’s three sites in Finland, namely Espoo, Oulu and Tampere.
