Nokia scraps COO post, Erlemeier leaves company on 01 January

Nokia has announced that it is discontinuing the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) and distributing its various functions to other executives. As a result, current COO Joerg Erlemeier has decided to step down from the group leadership team, it said, and leave the company on 01 January 2020.

President and CEO Rajeev Suri said Erlemeier has been a trusted colleague and leaves Nokia with thanks and deep appreciation for his many important contributions.

Erlemeier said he is ready to take on new challenges after 25 years at Nokia. He said the company is in the middle of a transition and he believes that the right plan is in place to improve future performance.

Nokia announced that its board chair, Risto Siilasmaa, informed the board that he will not stand for re-election at the Nokia AGM in 2020. Siilasmaa joined the Nokia board in 2008 and was appointed chair in 2012. He also served as interim CEO of Nokia from 2013 to 2014.

Nokia cuts outlook, drops dividend on tough competition in 5G market

Nokia has cut its outlook for this year and next, citing tough competition in the early days of the 5G market. The company said it will suspend dividends in Q3 and Q4 in order to invest more in improving its portfolio and strengthening its cash position.

Nokia has declared over 2,000 patent families to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) as essential for the 5G standard. The company said it played a leading role in contributing technologies to 5G, working with the 3GPP organisation to create 5G standards and enabling the rollout of 5G networks.
