Nokia wins USD 137 mln arbitration award in BlackBerry licensing dispute

Nokia has won USD 137 million in back licensing payments from BlackBerry in a ruling by the International Chamber of Commerce's International Court of Arbitration.  has ruled against the company in a contract dispute with Nokia Corporation. BlackBerry said it accepts the decision but is continuing with a separate case of patent infringement against Nokia.

Nokia filed the complaint with the ICC's arbitration panel in April 2016. The dispute related to whether certain payments allegedly due under a patent license contract between the companies are in fact owed to Nokia under the terms of the agreement. On 29 November, the arbitration panel awarded Nokia USD 137 million.

The dispute did not involve any allegations of IP infringement, and BlackBerry is continuing to pursue patent infringement claims against Nokia via suits filed in both Germany and the US.

Nokia rejected BlackBerry's claims of patent infringement, saying they are "without merit". The company added that it had already recorded much of the licencing income in its accounts in previous periods.
