Ofcom sees 700 MHz band auction as early as 2016
UK regulator Ofcom started a public consultation on opening up the 700 MHz band to mobile broadband services. The timetable proposed would see the band released from broadcasting in 2022, or possibly two years earlier. Ofcom said an auction could be held as early as 2016. The band is currently used for digital terrestrial broadcasting as well as programme making and special events. 

The consultation focuses on Ofcom's assessment of the costs and benefits of changing the band to mobile use. The regulator expects mobile broadband in the 700 MHz band could provide significant economic benefits, of GBP 900 million to 1.3 billion, without hampering the quality of digital broadcasting. 

Following the consultation, the regulator expects to reach decisions on any potential changes in use of the 700 MHz spectrum band in late 2014 or early 2015. Alongside the consultation Ofcom published a statement on its mobile data strategy and a discussion document on the future of free-to-view TV. Public comments in the consultation can be submitted until 29 August.

UK communications regulator Ofcom has opened a public consultation until 23 January 2015 on proposals for its auction of spectrum in the 2.3 GHz and 3.4 GHz band, expected to take place in late 2015 or early 2016.
