OneWeb confirms successful launch of 36 new satellites

Satellite communications company OneWeb has confirmed the successful launch of 36 satellites from a Soyuz launch vehicle on 18 December, paving the way for commercial services. 

This launch brings the total number of LEO satellites in orbit to 110. OneWeb plans to operate a 648 LEO satellite constellation to provide high-speed global connectivity. It is on track to launch regional commercial services in the UK, Northern Europe, Alaska, Greenland, Iceland and Canada in 2021; followed by global service in 2022.

Hughes Network Systems was awarded a three-year contract valued at approximately USD 250 million by OneWeb to develop and manufacture essential ground system technology for OneWeb's new Leo constellation. Arianespace confirms launch of 36 more OneWeb satellites on 18 December

Arianespace released details of its next Soyuz mission, which as expected will mark the resumption of the OneWeb constellation's deployment. The Soyuz rocket will launch from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia on 18 December, carrying a payload of 36 OneWeb satellites. Scheduled at 21:26 hrs local time, Flight ST29 will be the first commercial mission from Vostochny Cosmodrome performed by Arianespace and its Starsem affiliate.

Arianespace said that a Soyuz flight in December will mark the resumption of the OneWeb constellation's deployment. The mission is scheduled from the Vostochny Cosmodrome with 36 satellites on board. The news coincides with the announcement by OneWeb that it has amended an existing launch contract with Arianespace with the aim to complete its constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.
