OneWeb to resume satellite launches in Q4; commercial services to launch by end-2021

Satellite company OneWeb has amended an existing launch contract with Arianespace to complete deployment of the OneWeb constellation. The agreement is subject to confirmation and finalisation of the OneWeb restructuring plan. 

Launches of OneWeb satellites are scheduled to restart in December 2020, putting the company on track to complete deployment of its LEO satellite constellation by end-2022. The amended contract covers 16 launches to place an additional 34-36 satellites per launch into the OneWeb network. The December launch will increase OneWeb's in-orbit fleet to 110 satellites, with the company planning to launch commercial services by end-2021. Initial regions will include the UK, Northern Europe, Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Iceland and the Arctic seas. OneWeb expects the sale of the company, to investors led by the UK Government and India's Bharti Global, to close in Q4 2020.

Arianespace confirms launch of 36 more OneWeb satellites on 18 December

Arianespace released details of its next Soyuz mission, which as expected will mark the resumption of the OneWeb constellation's deployment. The Soyuz rocket will launch from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia on 18 December, carrying a payload of 36 OneWeb satellites. Scheduled at 21:26 hrs local time, Flight ST29 will be the first commercial mission from Vostochny Cosmodrome performed by Arianespace and its Starsem affiliate.

OneWeb emerges from bankruptcy with new CEO

Broadband satellite company OneWeb has successfully emerged from US Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after securing all relevant regulatory approvals. The UK government and Bharti Global are the new owners of OneWeb, investing USD 1 billion to provide broadband connectivity services through a network of 650 LEO satellite. OneWeb will continue to be headquartered in the UK, with Neil Masterson appointed as the new CEO. He was formerly Co-Chief Operating Officer at news, information and software group Thomson
