Orange France doubles mobile adds in Q1

Orange France reported revenue down 1.6 percent to EUR 4.72 billion, on a comparable basis and excluding the impact of regulatory measures in the first quarter. The operator added 164,000 net mobile customers in the quarter, nearly twice the 85,000 added in the year-earlier period. Customer growth was driven by fleet management related exceptional gross sales in the enterprise market and a record retail adds. Mobile service revenue fell 4.2 percent, excluding regulatory impacts, a smaller decline than in previous quarters. Growth was also spurred by mobile equipment sales, up 24.9 percent. Orange said the effect of price decreases on Sosh, Open and Origami plans in 2012 and 2013 are gradually lessening.

The Origami and Open premium offers represented more than 60% of gross retail sales and 4G had 800,000 net additions over the quarter. Total mobile ARPU stood at EUR 22.60 a month in the first quarter, compared with EUR 24.10 a year earlier. A growing share of retail contracts were subscribed as SIM-only offers and represented 39.3 percent of all retail contracts at the end of March 2015, versus 27.2 percent a year earlier. Orange France’s contract customer base grew 6.6 percent to 22.41 million. 4G customers reached 4.5 million, up by 800,000 in the first quarter.

Fixed service revenue declined by 1.6 percent to EUR 2.58 billion, although fixed broadband revenue rose 1.1 percent. Fixed customers slipped to 16.43 million from 16.92 million. Fixed broadband customers increased by 2.8 percent to 10.42 million, including 638,000 fibre customers, up 74.6 percent on 365,000 a year earlier. Fixed broadband added 68,000 net customers, with a market share of net adds estimated at 25 percent in the quarter, a significant increase from a 14 percent share in the first quarter of 2014. Fibre growth accelerated, with 75,000 adds.

Convergent offers accounted for 46.7 percent of fixe broadband customers at the end of March, up on 39.3 percent a year earlier. Broadband ARPU slipped to EUR 33.20 from EUR 33.60. Orange France had 13.86 million wholesale fixed lines at the end of March.
