Orange leads French mobile networks quality survey, Bouygues move up to 2nd

French consumers continue to experience an improvement in mobile data speeds, with networks delivering average download rates of 30 Mbps this year, compared to 24 Mbps in 2017, according to French regulator Arcep. This latest set of QoS measures also found that Orange remained ahead of rivals in providing the best overall mobile experience across 2G, 3G and LTE services. Bouygues Telecom moved into second place, overtaking SFR, while Free Mobile continued to trail behind its main competitors, penalised by a smaller LTE footprint.

Arcep said that the scope of its study was further enlarged this year to test the quality of mobile services in more locations, including twenty popular tourist destinations, and additional transport routes, such as the Eurostar.

Mobile internet speeds improved in all three geographic zones monitored by the study, covering low, medium, and high density population areas. Mobile users in rural communities continued to experience much slower data services on average, compared to those in the largest cities (14 Mbps versus 43 Mbps). Bouygues Telecom was slightly ahead of SFR and Orange in the QoS ranking for rural areas.
