OTE, Fon to create My WiFi network in Greece

OTE is partnering with Fon, the global Wi-Fi network, to create the OTE My WiFi network. The ambition of the two companies is to create the largest Wi-Fi network in Greece. In addition to Wi-Fi access in the country, OTE customers will get access to more than 12 million hotspots abroad. All OTE Double Play customers with a compatible modem have the ability to become Fon members for free: In exchange for sharing a portion of their own bandwidth at home, they will receive free access to shared broadband connections of other OTE Double Play customers in Greece and of Fon customers in other countries.

In countries such as the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Croatia and Brazil, customers already share their broadband connections and receive free access to millions hotspots in the Fon network.

OTE Greece cost cuts outpace drop in revenues

The Greek fixed-line market lost a net 6,000 lines in the fourth quarter of 2013, according to incumbent OTE's latest report. OTE posted a net loss of 49,000 retail access lines, slowing from losses of 52,000 in Q3 and 63,000 in Q4. OTE posts first sales growth in 5 years

Greek operator OTE reported its first increase in revenues in five years in the fourth quarter, with an annual rise of 0.1 percent to EUR 1.046 billion. Adjusted for the sale of Hellas Sat last year and cuts to mobile termination rates, revenues rose nearly 2 percent, the company said. Growth was driven by a recovery at its operations in Romania and Albania, while Greek revenues continued lower. OTE, Cosmote support Greek EU Presidency

OTE and its mobile unit Cosmote are supporting the increased telecommunication needs of the Greek government during its presidency of the European Union. The new CEO of Deutsche Telekom, Tim Hoettge, and Claudia Nemat, DT's board member responsible for Europe, met with the CEO of Greek operator OTE Michael Tsamaz and the Greek Prime minister Antonis Samaras to discuss the group's investment and strategic plans in Greece. Global Wi-Fi network Fon has completed financing totalling USD 14 million (EUR 10.3 million). South Africa ISP Mweb has announced a new partnership with Wi-Fi provider Fon. KPN to start testing Fon Wi-Fi service in April

KPN plans to start testing a national Wi-Fi service with Fon in April, the company told Telecompaper. The Dutch operator announced a year ago an agreement with Fon to open up customer Wi-Fi routers to sharing, and the service was expected to launch in late 2013. No reason was given for the delay.
