PC shipments hit record highs in Q3, boosted by covid-19-related sales
The PC market reached record levels in the third quarter, hitting levels not seen over the past ten years, according to the latest study from Canalys. The number of PCs sold climbed 12.7 percent from the year before to 79.2 million, boosted by the coronavirus pandemic and consequent lockdowns. Canalys noted that the quarter follows a weak first quarter, and that the recovery started in the second quarter continued into the third, even compared to the strong market of the year earlier. Canalys expects IT expenditure, including investment in PCs, to be a core driver of economic recoveries in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Notebook shipments meanwhile touched 64 million units, almost as much as the record of 64.6 reached in the last quarter of 2011, as companies continued to invest in longer-term transitions to remote working. Shipments of notebooks and mobile workstations together grew 28.3 percent year-on-year but for desktop and desktop workstations, they shrank 26.0 percent.

Lenovo regained its top spot on the PC market in Q3, with shipments lifting 11.4 percent to 19.27 million. HP came next with shipments up 11.9 percent to 18.66 million, followed by Dell, off 0.5 percent to 11.98 million, Apple, up 13.2 percent to 6.37 million and Acer, 15 percent higher to 5.64 million.

Lenovo’s market share amounted to 24.3 percent, followed by HP with 23.6 percent, Dell with 15.1 percent Apple with 8.1 percent and Acer with 7.1 percent. Other manufacturers did lift their market share to 21.8 percent from 19.6 percent, with shipments rising to 17.27 million from 13.74 million.
