Qualcomm announced that its president Cristiano Amon will be the company's new CEO from 30 June. He replaces Steve Mollenkopf, who plans to retire after 26 years at Qualcomm, including over seven as CEO.
Mollenkopf will remain a strategic advisor for a period of time after stepping down. He has led the company through a number of turbulent years, seeing off a hostile takeover from Broadcom, pressure from shareholders to change the dual structure of the group, numerous competition investigations around the world and licensing disputes with major customers such as Apple and Huawei.
The board's unanimous decision to name Amon the new CEO suggests the company is set to focus more on its product strategy. Mollenkopf said it was good moment for Amon to take over, after Amon helped develop and launch the group's 5G strategy and the shift into new IoT markets beyond mobile phones.
Amon (50) has served as president of Qualcomm since January 2018, leading the company's semiconductor business (QCT) and global operations. Qualcomm said he has been leading the product roadmap for almost 15 years, as well as overseeing M&A to support the company's move into new markets such as RD front end, connectivity and networking. Amon first joined Qualcomm in 1995 as an engineer and has held several business and technical leadership positions since then.
