Renault selects Qualcomm and Google to power infotainment system of new electric car

Car maker Renault has chosen Qualcomm’s third generation Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit platform for the infotainment system of a new electric model within the Megane range. The car’s digital cockpit will be powered by Google’s AAOS (Android Automotive Operating System), providing built-in apps and services such as Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play.

Renault will showcase the new car model (Megane E-Tech Electric) at the IAA Mobility event starting this week in Munich. The vehicle features a display positioned in front of the driver, complemented by a 12-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system on the higher-spec versions.

French consortium Software Republique starts Mobility 4.0 Challenge

Software Republique, a French consortium set up in April to foster cooperation in the field of intelligent mobility, is organizing a new competition called The Mobility 4.0 Challenge. The contest is centred around five themes, namely improving user experience related to electric vehicles, multimodal accessibility, intelligent transport, cybersecurity, and open ideas. Participants have six weeks to apply, from 6 September to 13 October. Winners will be announced in December.

Volkswagen starts 4G data services for car owners with Verizon, T-Mobile US

Volkswagen said its Car-Net system will let people get 4G from either Verizon or T-Mobile US from 1 September. The option, called Carrier of Choice, lets VW owners in the US access mobile data subscription plans on the car manufacturer's website or via its mobile app. People add an account to their existing mobile provider (if it is Verizon or T-Mobile) and pair it with their existing Volkswagen Car-Net subscription. People not with either Verizon or T-Mobile can get unlimited 4G data for USD 20 per month.
