RIM to offer free premium apps as compensation
Research In Motion said it will offer Blackberry customers over USD 100 of free apps to make up for the three days of disruption to its services last week. The apps will be made available on BlackBerry App World from 19 October until the end of the year and include games such as SIMS 3, Bejeweled, NOVA and Texas Hold'em Poker 2; the Drive Safe.ly and iSpeech Translator apps for iSpeech; Shazam Encore; Vlingo Plus and Nobex Radio. More titles in the free selection will be announced later. RIM's enterprise customers will also be offered one month of free Technical Support. The company said it was "grateful to our loyal BlackBerry customers for their patience" and "will work tirelessly to restore their confidence". This includes "immediate and aggressive steps to help prevent something like this from happening again". BlackBery services were disrupted for around three days in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India, and 1-2 days in the Americas. RIM blamed the disruption on a switch failure and said it restored full services on 13 October.
