The Russian Ministry of Communications has asked the Rambler Group and other internet companies to reduce the quality of their video streaming services, reports RBC. The ministry believes the increased use of online video could overload networks during the covid-19 pandemic quarantine.
The quality of the video-content should be limited to 720p using mobile applications and up to 1,080p using desktop browsers.
Aleksey Byrdin, head of industry group Internet-Video, does not believe the measure will significantly help reduce the network workload because most online services already use adaptive streaming technology. The quality of the video-content drops automatically if the telecom link does not have enough capacity.
