Samsung acquires second-screen app developer Movl
Samsung has acquired the start-up Movl to help develop second-screen apps. MOVL is the maker of the Kontrol.tv API platform, which lets developers create apps to connect TVs via the cloud, as well as mobile phones on home networks. The platform was fully launched last fall, after a year and a half of development. A representative from MOVL confirmed to TechCrunch that the company joined Samsung in April. The startup was one of the first winners of Samsung's Connected TV developer contests, with its WeDraw app, which enables users to draw images through an app on their mobile phones or tablets, and have those illustrations be displayed on a Samsung TV. Its Kontrol.tv interface works with both Samsung and Google TV devices, as well as iOS and Android phones and tablets.

Samsung adds new apps to Samsung Smart TV platform

Samsung Electronics has announced the availability of new apps that give consumers the opportunity to discover and enjoy more content. New apps available this spring include: Fox Now, Spotify and Univision's UVideos. Samsung Electronics has launched HomeSync, a home hub system. The HomeSync device comes with a 1 TB drive, providing shared or private storage for content. Samsung looking to eliminate set-top box in many countries

Samsung is looking in a number of countries to replace the set-top box with a decoder, using an app in the Samsung Smart Hub. Earlier this week, Belgacom said it wanted to eliminate the need for a set-top box by the end of the year, for subscribers with a Samsumg Smart TV. Samsung Netherlands also said it was studying possibilities in the country. The company has more than 550 apps available, including some for OTT TV such as Eredivisie Live.

Belgacom in talks with Samsung over connected TVs

Belgacom is negotiations with Samsung about its Smart TVs with built-in decoder, De Tijd reported. The Belgian incumbent wants to eliminate the need for a separate set-top box. According to the daily, Belgacom CEO Didier Bellens announced during his New Year's speech that customers buying a new Samsung TV will be able to return their set-top boxes at the end of the year. The modem/router will remain. It is not known whether Belgacom is also in talks with other TV manufacturers.
