
Samsung leads European patent applications in 2013

Samsung made the most applications for European patents last year, with a total 2,833 applications, according to the European Patent Office's annual report. It was followed by Siemens, Philips, LG, BASF, Robert Bosch, Mitsubishi, General Electric, Qualcomm and Ericsson. Patent filings at the EPO grew by 2.8 percent last year to a new record of 266,000. The EPO granted 66,700 European patents, which was 1.6 percent more than in 2012. The 38 member countries of the European Patent Treaty governing the EPO accounted for 35 percent of all filings last year. The US accounted for another 24 percent, followed by Japan with 20 percent, China at 8 percent and South Korea with 6 percent.
