Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg has set aside USD 31 million in the company’s stock for her charity fund, according to an SEC filing seen by Re/code. The document shows that Sandberg transferred 290,000 shares to the Sheryl Sandberg Philanthropy Fund on 20 November, a day on which the shares closed at USD 107. The donor-advised fund allows givers to take tax breaks and to earn profit with no capital gains tax. Sandberg is expected to user her donation to promote gender equality programmes.
Sandberg sits on the board of Women for Women International, which works in conflict regions, and has helped to organise women’s leadership circles around the world through her influential book ‘Lean In’. Sandberg, who reportedly once gave an unknown recipient USD 400,000 in shares, joins Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffett, and Bill and Melinda Gates in pledging to dedicate most of her wealth to philanthropy.
