Serbian government abandons Telekom sale
The Serbian government on May 5 adopted a decision not to accept the offer of Telekom Austria to buy 51 percent of Telekom Srbija for EUR 1.1 billion. The government also instructed the Ministry of Finance to inform Telekom Austria of this decision and to end the sale of Telekom Srbija. Serbian Economy Minister Nebojsa Ciric said that citizens will get free shares of Telekom Srbija in the next two months, and the trading of these shares on the stock exchange could start this summer.

Telekom Austria, which has recently rebranded itself as A1, has not lost interest in purchasing a stake in Telekom Srbija, according to Austrian media reports. A1 still hopes to hold negotiations with the Serbian government after parliamentary elections in 2012. Austrian media say that the price of EUR 1.4 billion set by the Serbian government for a 51 percent stake was too high.

Telekom Austria regrets refusal of Telekom Srbija offer

Telekom Austria Group says it regrets the decision by the Serbian government to reject its renewed offer for a 51 percent stake in Telekom Srbija. Telekom Austria insists that the offer would have enabled a long-term partnership and that the EUR 1.4 billion minimum price set by the Serbian authorities was not economically viable for Telekom Austria. It remains convinced that the current offer is attractive and fairly reflects the market conditions.
