SK hynix starts mass production of 18GB mobile DRAM, Asus ROG 5 first phone

SK Hynix said it has started mass producing 18 GB LPDDR5 mobile DRAM, which it says provides the largest capacity in the industry. The product is aimed at premium smartphones, and namely those for gamers, or those wanting high-quality videos with high-resolution images. The company added that the application will probably continue to expand as technologies develop for ultra-high-performance camera applications and artificial intelligence, among other uses.

The upcoming Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) 5 gaming smartphone is the first to receive the new capacity. Asus is expected to officially unveil the new phone on 10 March. 

The new product runs at up to 6,400 Mbps, about 20 percent faster than the mobile DRAM LPDDR5 with 5,500Mbps for existing smartphones. The data rate means it can transfer ten 5 GB Full-HD movies per second.

SK hynix said it received merger clearance from the Chinese antitrust authority, State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) for its acquisition of Intel's NAND and SSD business. With SAMR's merger clearance, SK hynix received all required merger clearances in eight jurisdictions from the relevant competition authorities.

SK hynix posts record Q3 revenues after 45% year-on-year growth

SK hynix reported record revenues of KRW 11.8 trillion for the third quarter. Sales rose 45 percent year-on-year and by 14 percent on a quarterly basis on the growing demand for chips in smartphones and servers. Operating profit more than tripled on an annual basis to KRW 4.2 trillion, and the net profit rose 206 percent to KRW 3.3 trillion.

SK hynix reported second-quarter revenues of KRW 10.32 trillion, up 20 percent from a year earlier and 22 percent higher than in Q1. The company said this was the first time it passed KRW 10 trillion in quarterly sales since 2018, thanks to the boom the memory market.

SK hynix saw its revenue for Q1 increase 18 percent to KRW 8.494 trillion. Its operating profit grew 66 percent to KRW 1.324 trillion, and net income rose 53 percent to KRW 993 billion. Operating margin for the quarter was 16 percent, up 5 percent, and the net margin was 12 percent.

Park, in his new role, will be in charge of building the corporate culture and lead the company's efforts to establish long-term strategy to strengthen global competitiveness and find new growth opportunities. Existing CEO Seok-Hee Lee will be responsible for development, investment and operation to strengthen technology and product competitiveness.

SK hynix to invest KRW 120 trillion in new semiconductor plant deployment

South Korea has approved local chipmaker SK hynix's project to build a new semiconductor plant. Overall investments in the project are expected to reach KRW 120 trillion (approximately USD 106 billion), Yonhap news agency reports. According to the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, SK hynix's new semiconductor plant will be based in Yongin, 50 kilometers south of Seoul.

SK hynix unveils DDR5 DRAM

SK hynix has launched a DDR5 DRAM, optimized for big data, AI, and machine learning. Since SK hynix announced the development of its 16 Gigabit (Gb) DDR5 DRAM on November 2018, the company reports it has provided its major partners including Intel with sample products, and has completed various tests and verification of its functions and compatibility.
