SK Telecom to power Now Telecom's 5G deployment in Philippines
Now Corporation and its Philippines telecom unit Now Telecom have signed a partnership deal with South Korean operator SK Telecom. Under the terms of the deal, SK Telecom will support Now Telecom’s 5G rollout on the local market.

The trilateral agreement between Now Corp, Now Telecom and SK Telecom covers 5G collaboration and development areas, such as Technical Roadmap Planning – Network Conceptualization and Design – 5G Core Network Training – Establishment of 5G stand-alone (SA) network commercial infrastructure – In-building Solutions and 5G B2B Service Development. SK Telecom also plans to extend its 5G-based applications and services to serve enterprises and home broadband users in the Philippines.

South Korea launched the world’s first commercial 5G service in April this year. SK Telecom recently announced it had passed the milestone of 1 million 5G subscribers in the first 140 days since the launch of its 5G network on 3 April. The company’s 5G subscribers account for more than 3.5 percent of SK Telecom’s total subscriber base of 28 million.

Philippines operator Now Corp reports that its Fiber Air business's gross revenue reached PHP 185.9 million in 2019 versus PHP 112.4 million in 2018, which represents an increase of 65 percent. Revenue growth was mainly boosted by higher demand in guaranteed broadband from the enterprise segment. Total gross revenues reached PHP 220.7 million, and net income jumped to PHP 11.3 million in 2019, up 39 percent year-on-year.

Philippines-based Now Telecom has signed a partnership agreement with Aboitiz InfraCapital (AIC) and Frontier Tower Associates Management (FTA). The parties agreed to discuss and negotiate the lease of build-to-suit sites, towers, and passive telecommunications infrastructure and facilities that will be made available for the installation of Now's facilities and equipment to provide telecommunications and/or internet services.

South Korean operator SK Telecom posted revenue of KRW 4.561 trillion for the third quarter of 2019, which represents an increase of 9 percent year-on-year. Operating income slightly declined by 0.7 percent to KRW 302.1 billion, while net income jumped 5.9 percent to KRW 274.4 billion compared to the previous quarter. In particular, mobile communications business revenue edged up by 0.1 percent year-on-year, representing an increase for the first time in eight quarters.

South Korean 5G subscribers reached a record monthly data usage of 87,928 TB in September, Yonhap news agency reports, citing data from the Ministry of Science and ICT. South Korea reached 3.46 million 5G subscribers at 30 September. Monthly data usage thus reached around 25.97 GB per user in September.

Philippines operator Now Telecom plans to launch 5G services on the local market. The company plans to offer its 5G services to both residential and business customers, Business Word Online reports, citing Now Telecom president Rodolfo Pantoja. Now Telecom has also announced that its board of directors approved an 11 percent share swap with its parent Now Corp., which will increase the company's share in Now Telecom to 30 percent.
