SmarTone starts offer for Samsung 5G Galaxy Pass smartphone

Hong Kong operator SmarTone launched the Samsung 5G Galaxy Pass promotional offer, which will run until 28 February. Customers who subscribe to a designated plan for the monthly fee of HKD 438 and purchase a Galaxy Note 10 series can get a HKD 2,200 handset coupon and Samsung 5G Galaxy Pass smartphone at HKD 100. 

This allows them to reserve and upgrade to Hong Kong’s first Samsung 5G flagship smartphone. Customers can opt to upgrade to a designated 5G service plan when trading-up to the 5G smartphone. In addition, customers can also get double local data up to 20GB and 4GB of Greater Bay Area Data during the contract period, plus free 12-month Upgraded Back-to Front SmarTone Screen Replace (value HKD 350). If customers are required to trade-in a designated handset, they can further get an extra HKD 200 trade-in bonus and get inno3C i9 Pro True Wireless Earphones (value HKD 799) for free.

Hutchison, HKT, China Mobile to launch 5G service in Hong Kong on 1 April

Hutchison Telecom, HKT and China Mobile HK plan to launch 5G services in Hong Kong on 1 April, the first day on which their 5G spectrum becomes available. Hutchison hopes to overturn the exclusion zones, which cover approximately 10 percent of the city's population, Light Reading reports, citing Hutchison CEO Kenny Koo. To prevent interference with legacy satellite broadcast services, mobile operators must deliver 5G via other spectrum bands.

SmarTone's 6-month profit plunges 20% on declining handset business, roaming services

Hong Kong operator SmarTone posted group profit of HKD 256 million for the six months ended 31 December 2019, which represents a decline of 20 percent year-on-year. The decrease was mainly due to lower profitability in the handset business, a substantial decline in inbound roaming due to the significant fall in visitors, and higher depreciation resulting from investments in mobile infrastructure and IT systems in the prior period, the company said.

The Programme covers the launch of an online one-stop information hub, as well as a series of informative seminars and workshops, and a cross-generation eSports competition to raise public awareness on digital intelligence, particularly in preparation for the 5G era, SmarTone said.

SmarTone demos new 5G applications with start-ups

SmarTone announced the collaboration with start-ups at the SmarTone 5G Innovation Hub on a new wave of 5G live demos. In collaboration with Formula Square, a start-up of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks, SmarTone orchestrated 5G high-speed and low-latency connectivity using the 3.3 GHz and 28 GHz frequency bands, to support the live demo and live broadcasts.

SmarTone to pay final dividend of HKD 0.21 per share

The board of directors of Hong Kong operator SmarTone has recommended a final dividend of HKD 0.21 per share in the capital of the company for the year ended 30 June 2019. This dividend will be payable to shareholders on record at 11 November. At the annual general meeting of the company held on 1 November 2019, this final dividend was approved.

Hong Kong operator SmarTone has launched a 5G live field trial in both the 3.5 GHz and 28 GHz bands simultaneously. SmarTone acquired the permits from the Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) for conducting this trial.
