Snapchat starts charging for message replays
Messaging app Snapchat has introduced a new paid service for users to recover disappearing messages. The company first introduced its Replay service almost two years ago, allowing users to see again messages that have been deleted. Replay is limited to one message per day per user. The company is now offering access to more messages over Replay, at a cost of three messages for USD 0.99. Replay can still only be used once for each message over Snapchat. 

The company also announced the new Lenses feature. This adds animations and effects to selfie photos; a gallery of options is displayed below the on-screen image to add before taking the picture.

Snapchat takes new acting CFO from Mattel

Snapchat has appointed Drew Vollero, a finance executive at toy maker Mattel, its new VP of finance and acting chief financial officer, the Wall Street Journal reported. Vollero will report to Imran Khan, a former technology banker hired last year to oversee strategy at the mobile messaging company.

Messaging apps used by over a third of US smartphone users

Over a third (36%) of US smartphone users use messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Kik or iMessage, and 17 percent use apps that automatically delete sent messages such as Snapchat or Wickr, according to the latest survey from Pew Internet. Both of these kinds of apps are particularly popular among young adults. Half (49%) of smartphone owners aged 18 to 29 use messaging apps, while 41 percent use apps that automatically delete sent messages. Snapchat's base in the Netherlands is growing quickly, with almost 2 million consumers having the app installed on their smartphones in June. Snapchat accounts for 75% of messaging data on Vodafone UK

Picture and video messaging app Snapchat accounts for a staggering 75 percent of messaging data traffic on the Vodafone UK network, the operator said in a blog post. This means that other popular messaging services like Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger have to share the remainder. The operator writes that with the My Vodafone app, customers can keep track of their data consumption.

Snapchat raises USD 538 mln from new investors

Messaging app Snapchat is raising another USD 650 million in equity financing. According to a SEC filing, the company already raised USD 538 million of the round in recent months and targets a total USD 650 million. New investors in the latest round include Alibaba and the hedge funds Glade Brook Capital Partners and York Capital Management. The financing values Snapchat at USD 16 billion, a person familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. Snapchat plans IPO

Snapchat is working on an initial public offering of shares. CEO Evan Spiegel said at Re/code's annual conference in California that the messaging service has a plan for an IPO and a listing is "really important". He declined to say when the company would go to the market. Snapchat has around 100 million daily users, mainly young people. Noting an earlier takeover bid from Facebook, which Snapchat rejected, Spiegel said the company plans to remain independent.
