NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has said that the US government has been hacking Chinese targets, including mobile operators and a university, the Wall Street Journal writes. "The NSA does all kinds of things like hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal all of your SMS data," Snowden told the South China Morning Post. In addition to mobile phone companies, the Tsinghua University has also been the subject of hacking by the NSA, according to Snowden. At least 63 computers and servers were attacked in one day in January this year. Snowden also said that computers at fibre network operator PacNet have been hacked by the US in 2009, but that this operation has since been shut down.
