Telia Company has announced that its Finnish arm, Sonera, has now been renamed Telia. It said all the fully owned subsidiaries in the Nordic and Baltic region will now bear the name 'Telia'. In Latvia, Telia Company offers mobile services through LMT, of which it owns 60.3 percent. Telia also holds 49 percent of fixed network company Lattelecom.
Johan Dennelind, the president and CEO of Telia Company, said the change will enable it to better serve its Finnish customers by combining the international strength of Telia Company with the local expertise and position of Sonera.
Telia dropped Finnish as an official language in May 2016, even though nearly 89 percent of Finland’s population speaks Finnish. Sonera was called Telecom Finland until 1998, but began life as Suomen Lennatinlaitos (Finnish Telegraph Agency) in 1917.
