Sony merges camera, smartphone and home entertainment divisions

Sony announced plans to merge its Imaging Products & Solutions (IP&S), Home Entertainment & Sound (HE&S) and Mobile Communications (MC) divisions as the Electronics Products & Solutions (EP&S) Business, effective 1 April. Shigeki Ishizuka, who already leads the camera and mobile phone businesses, will be appointed as Officer in charge of EP&S, and Ichiro Takagi, the current head of home entertainment, will be appointed as Deputy Officer in charge, also effective 1 April.

In accordance with the realignment of the business structure, the company will realign its business segment category in its financial result reports and disclose its operating performance by business segment as EP&S from the fiscal year to 31 March 2020.

Sony outlines new Playstation strategy to focus on streaming

Sony has outlined its medium-term strategy in a meeting with investors. The company plans to invest more in expanding its lead in camera sensors, as well as shift its gaming business to a streaming model, available across multiple devices and platforms. For smartphones and consumer electronics, the group will work on more cost savings and synergies, including with its content businesses.

Sony doubles profit in FY despite lower results at mobile, less smartphones sold

Sony's net profit almost doubled for its full year to end March, jumping to JPY 916.3 billion from 490.8 billion, on revenues up 1 percent year-on-year to JPY 8.544 trillion. Earnings per share went higher to JPY 707.74 from 397.75. Results got a boost from games and network services, which offset the damage at mobile, where results were hit by less smartphone sales, inventory write-downs and restructuring charges. Sony chairman Hirai to step down in June

Sony's chairman Kazuo Hirai plans to step down at the next annual shareholders meeting after 35 years with the company. The former CEO will be replaced by Shuzo Sumi, who has been an outside director of the company since 2017. Hirai will continue to be available as a senior adviser to management, the company said.

Sony heeft plannen aangekondigd om de divisies Imaging Products & Solutions (IP&S), Home Entertainment & Sound (HE&S) en Mobile Communications (MC) samen te voegen tot de Electronics Products & Solutions (EP&S) Business vanaf 1 april. Shigeki Ishizuka, die al de camera- en mobiele telefoonbedrijven leidt, zal worden benoemd tot eindverantwoordelijke. Ichiro Takagi, het huidige hoofd van home entertainment, zal worden aangesteld als plaatsvervangend topman, ook met ingang van 1 april.

Sony will close its local representations in Austria and Switzerland at the end of March, as part of a restructuration exercise, reports Games.ch. Both countries will be served from Germany instead, reports Der Standard. The news has not been officially confirmed.

Sky, film studios agree to drop geo-blocking clauses after EU competition probe

Sky has agreed legally binding commitments to the European Commission to not include restrictive geographic clauses in its licensing deals with major studios. The commitments apply to Sky UK and Ireland's business with the studios Warner Bros, Sony Pictures, NBCUniversal and Disney. A similar agreement was reached with Paramount earlier.

Sony Pictures Virtual Reality (SPVR), Nokia and Intel are enabling Mobile World Congress attendees become Spider-Man with the new 'Spider-Man: far from home' VR experience, powered by 5G. The event is held in advance of the release of Sony Pictures' motion picture 'Spider-Man: Far from Home,' in theaters in July. The VR experience was developed by CreateVR.

Sony Corporation and Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) have announced that SIE Deputy President Jim Ryan will be appointed president and CEO of SIE, effective 1 April. Current SIE President and CEO John (Tsuyoshi) Kodera will focus on creating new user experiences and enhancing the network area as deputy president of SIE. Sony raises FY net profit forecast after strong growth in Q3

Sony has upped its net profit for the forecast for the full year after strong growth in the third quarter. The company's net profit jumped to JPY 429.0 billion in the third quarter from 295.1 billion the year before, despite revenues going lower to JPY 2.401 trillion from 2.672 trillion and restructuring charges advancing to JYP 6.9 billion from 3.1 billion year-on-year. The operating profit lifted to JPY 377.0 billion from 350.8 billion.

Sony merges TV, video, sound businesses into Home Entertainment & Sound Products unit

Sony Visual Products, which operates Sony's TV business, and Sony Video & Sound Products, which operates the Video and Sound businesses, will merge to form Sony Home Entertainment & Sound Products, effective 1 April. The new entity will focus on the design, development and manufacturing of TVs, video and sound products and associated peripherals, as well as overseeing all related/subsidiary businesses.
