Sony proposes warranty extension for Xperia waterproof class action

Sony has proposed a settlement of a class-action suit against the company in the US claiming its Xperia smartphones did not live up to their waterproof claim. While the company denies the allegations, Sony has offered to extend the warranty for a number of models. The proposed settlement has received preliminary approval from a federal court in New York, according to the law firm handling the case.

Customers with a phone still under warranty can receive a 12-month extension of the manufacturer's warranty, while others may receive a six-month extension. Customers with a phone still under warranty and affected by water damage may also file a claim with the company and receive up to 50 percent of the purchase price back if the claim is validated.

The case covers a wide range of models that were marketed as waterproof, going back to the Z Ultra and Z1 up to the more recent Z5, as well as several generations of Xperia tablets.

Objections to the proposed settlement can be filed until 01 November, and a hearing to confirm the deal is planned for 01 December.
