Spotify may scale back free music offer - report
Spotify is considering scaling back its free service in order to focus on paid subscriptions, the website Digital Music News reports. Several unnamed sources said that the company may offer certain releases only to paying Spotify subscribers, or limit access to non-paying customers to a very short window. Among the options under consideration, free users would have access to only one or two songs from a high-profile album, while paying subscribers could listen to the entire release. Another approach would limit content entirely to premium subscribers, though time-restricted exclusives for paying subscribers are also possible. Spotify is expected to take a decision and start rolling out the changes by early 2016. The aim is to encourage greater adoption of the paid, premium tier and drive more revenue from the most popular music and artists.
