Sunrise extends Swisscom fixed access agreement through June 2022
Swisscom and Sunrise said they have renewed their existing commercial agreement for landline access through June 2022. The new agreement is based on “roughly similar economic terms” to their present arrangement and will run from 01 January 2019 to 30 June 2022, said Sunrise. 

The agreement enables Sunrise to continue using Swisscom broadband access network, including both FTTH and xDSL, to deliver internet, voice and TV services. Under the extended agreement, Sunrise said it will undertake an upfront investment of CHF 101 million, paid in installments of 60 percent in 2019, 20 percent in 2020 and 20 percent in 2021.

Swiss operator Sunrise has joined the Next Generation Enterprise Network Alliance (Ngena), a global telecommunications alliance including T-Systems, Centurylink, PCCWGlobal and A1 Telekom Austria Group. Sunrise said its membership in the alliance will make it possible for companies in Switzerland and around the world to obtain SD-WAN service from a single source as Ngena integrates all alliance partners' networks into one SDN via its central technology platform.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 to go on sale at CHF 1,049 in Switzerland

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will start selling in Switzerland on 24 August. The flagship smartphone will be offered by Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt, Mobilezone, UPC Switzerland, Interdiscount, Media Markt, Melectronics, Digitec, Manor, Fust, Microspot and Brack.ch. The portal CEtoday.ch has published an overview of prices for the smartphone in the individual operators' and retailers' offers.

Swiss police to test 3 radio networks at Zurich Streetparade

At the festival Streetparade 2018, taking place in Zurich on 11 August, the city and cantonal police, Protection and Rescue Zurich, together with the federal government, will test three different radio networks: BLUnet, which runs on the Sunrise network, Swisscom Public Safety Data and a proprietary LTE network built by Armasuisse, reported inside-IT.ch.

Swiss telecoms market Q1: Sunrise and Salt grow at expense of Swisscom and UPC; overall profitability high

The four largest operators on the Swiss market had combined revenues of CHF 3.24 billion in Q1 2018. That was down 0.5 percent year-on-year, but the combined EBITDA margin was to 40.8 percent (Q1 2017: 42.2%). With capex down to just 15.1 percent of revenues, at CHF 489 million, free cash flow peaked at CHF 835 billion. Sunrise and Salt are growing at the expense of Swisscom and UPC CH, as the market embraces FMC (fixed/mobile convergence).

Switzerland calls 5G spectrum auction for January 2019

The Swiss telecom regulator has called a 5G spectrum auction for January 2019. Operators interested in bidding for the frequencies in the 700 MHz, 1,400 MHz, 2,600 MHz and 3.5 GHz bands have until 05 October to file an application with Bakom.

Swiss mobile internet users are better off when using pre-paid services rather than monthly subscriptions, according to research from Swiss comparison portal Comparis. That holds true both for heavy users and even for so-called "digital nomads", who are practically permanently online. However, pre-paid services can be very expensive when using data roaming.

Swisscom to launch SMS successor RCS this year

SMS successor Rich Communication Services (RCS) has been rolled out in the first countries. Swisscom said it will the first Swiss provider to join, NZZ am Sonntag reported. Sunrise and Salt have not taken any decisions about RCS yet.

Swiss mobile users loyal, but monthly spend falling - survey

The share of Swiss mobile users with monthly spending of over CHF 40 has been gradually decreasing, dropping from 70 percent to 67.2 percent in the past year, according to an annual survey by the comparison site Bonus.ch among 2,500 respondents. At the same time, the number of people paying less than CHF 40 a month increased from 29.5 percent to 32.8 percent. For pre-paid offers, the number of customers paying less than CHF 15 a month increased from 58.4 to 63.9 percent.

Swisscom, Sunrise offer Apple Watch mobile subscriptions

Swiss operators Sunrise and Swisscom offer the Apple Watch Series 3 Cellular with e-SIM and mobile subscriptions, reported ITReseller. After Apple released the update for Switzerland, Apple Watch users can access the mobile network over the device. Apple Watch Series 3 Cellular is the only Apple Watch model allowing independent usage in mobile networks.
