Symbian gets EUR 22 mln research funding boost

The Symbian platform is receiving a EUR 22 million boost for further developing its technology. A consortium of 24 companies from eight European countries is being set up in order to fulfill this goal. The new SYMBEOSE (Symbian - the Embedded Operating System for Europe) consortium will set its sights on further developing the Symbian platform for use in a broader range of devices and services, such as energy efficient systems and cloud computing. The money comes from Artemis Joint Technology Initiative, a public-private partnership for investing in R&D in embedded systems. Around EUR 60 million comes from EU funds, while companies such as Nokia (Symbian parent) are contributing the rest. Italy, Germany, Netherlands and Finland constitute the largest donors of Artemis, with Italy and Germany contributing EUR 8 million each, and the Netherlands and Finland EUR 6 million each. Germany and Italy pay EUR 2.9 million each to Symbian, the Netherlands and Finland EUR 2.2 million each.
